SUPPORT LIVING
WAGES! Despite a record
stock market and strong economic growth, poverty remains high in the
United States. One out of five children live below the official poverty
line in the richest nation on earth. The population of Americas working
poor has grown because the wage floor has failed to keep pace with the
cost of living over the last three decades. The federal minimum wage,
which in 1968 stood at 86% of the wage necessary to lift a worker and
his or her family to the official poverty line for a family of four,
today represents less than 64% of that "living wage." The federal minimum
wage, presently $5.15 an hour, would need to be raised to $8.00 an hour
simply to meet the federal poverty level. In many higher-cost regions,
a true living wage is substantially higher (up to $18 per hour). To
learn more and to get involved to make your life as well as your Families
more prosperous. SUPPORT LIVING WAGES FOR ALL.

Goal of National Campaign Is to Keep People and Pets Together
National Training Center to Provide Tools For Animal Shelters Nationwide
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest
animal protection organization, has launched a campaign designed to
keep people and their pets together. HSUS leaders announced plans for
the campaign - Pets for Life - at its annual Animal Care Expo, which
is the world's largest trade show and educational conference for animal
care and control professionals.
Pets for Life is the next step in The HSUS' decades-long effort to reduce
pet overpopulation and to build the bond between pets and their owners.
The campaign is based on studies of people who have relinquished their
pets to animal shelters and on focus groups consisting of pet owners
who are struggling to keep their pets in spite of barriers. The research
shows that animal behavior problems, human health issues, difficulty
finding rental housing that allows pets, unrealistic expectations and
changes in the family lifestyle can lead people to break the bond with
their animal companions. Pets for Life will address all of these concerns
and will build on existing programs within The HSUS and in the nation's
animal shelters.

to involvement include uncertainty about an organization's goals and
lack of confidence that donations will be put to good use.
